Hallidays Works c 1860

By 1858, Halliday’s were well settled in Erskine Street at what was to be the business’ location until their move to Sussex Street over a century later; number 16 as shown in one of the earliest maps from the era. Later records show they had moved to Erskine Street in 1855. In 1858 Hallidays are listed in the local street directory produced for the first time that year, as Halliday, Laing & Co. 1859 newspaper advertisements style them as Halliday, Laing, and Morrison, Engineers Erskine Street and they appear in the street directory in 1861 with that name, with the location, 16 Erskine Street. In November 1859, Charles and his partners, Laing and Morrison were awarded the contracts to supply water locks for the Municipal Council of Sydney. The important water management contract was renewed the following year and Charles and his sons would continue to provide this service for the ensuing 25 years and the contract was also extended to include the sluice valves that were required to work with the locks.
